Mexican food Guide: Where to Find the Best Mexican in Rome

Mexican food Guide: Where to Find Mexican in Rome

Eating out in Italy involves a lot of pasta, pizza and predominantly Italian dishes. Besides supplementing their diet with the occasional burger or sushi, many Italians have no problem eating only Italian food day in and day out. So finding places that do decent Thai, Indian and Mexican food can be a real challenge.

Thankfully, I’ve done the dirty work so you don’t have to. There aren’t tons of options for Mexican in Rome but there are lots of small food stands that sell riffs on tacos, for example, and you can almost always find a somewhat subpar chips and guac appetizer at trendy restaurants. To get your full on burrito, enchilada and taco fix, however, you can check out one of my recommendations below!

Maybu (Margaritas y burritos), Prati

While there’s some controversy regarding the parent company and full-blown restaurant, La Cucaracha, I’ve only tried the food at Maybu and thoroughly enjoyed it. Offering very simple options and similar to a Chipotle in structure, this Mexican restaurant has frozen margs on tap, build-your-own tacos, nachos and burritos with different types of meat (carnitas, chicken and beef) that is very reminiscent of an Americanized-Mexican food joint. Recommend as a quick stop for a satisfying meal.

Tacos & Beer, Monti

This would be an example of one of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants that does drinks and quick tacos to eat outside the restaurant or at one of their few tables. With a few different taco options and a cocktail menu, Tacos & Beer is a fun place to grab an aperitivo with friends if you’re tired of all you can eat buffets but want more than some potato chips and bar nuts alongside your Aperol spritz.

La Punta, Trastevere

As an elevated option for Mexican in Rome, this restaurant and bar in Trastevere is everything you could ask for. Inventive decor, helpful wait staff, delicious cocktails with a focus on tequila (they have an out of this world margarita on the rocks) and some of the most interesting food dishes that I’ve found. La Punta has tiny cute tacos with baccalà (cod), spicy pork, chicken in mole sauce, and delicious churros for dessert. It's more expensive than the previous two spots but well worth the money for a great cocktail and delicious food.

Enjoy getting your taste of Mexico (or at the very least, Tex-Mex) in Rome!
