Barred: Creative Roman Cuisine and Natural Wines in Re di Roma

I’m always on the hunt for new and exciting restaurants in Rome, so I’ve heard a lot about Barred over the past year.

While some say they had a rocky start with some inconsistencies (which is par for the course with the food business) it seems as though they’ve really hit their stride when it comes to the menu and level of the food at this hipster-esque spot in Re di Roma.

Their food has a way of making the individual ingredients sing and I love how much attention they give to vegetables in a city where more often than not, pork is the star of the show. Add into the mix a bomb list of natural wines and craft beers and you’ve got a restaurant that I believe will only grow in popularity.

What’s notable about it:

Two young brothers doing delicious, creative Roman food with a focus on locally-sourced ingredients, paired with the best natural wines.

“L’idea di Barred è quella di proporre una cucina italiana e contemporanea, fatta di pochi ingredienti ma capace di mettere al centro la stagionalità e la naturalità dei prodotti,  proponendoli in maniera diretta e sincera”

Who’s it for:

People who want to step outside their comfort zone of purely traditional Italian cuisine and try those authentic dishes with a modern take. Instead of plates that feel rich and overly indulgent, the freshness of the ingredients comes through and pairs perfectly with the natural wine they recommend.

What does it feel like:

Barred is no trattoria in Trastevere. This small restaurant is located near Re di Roma and feels much “cooler” for lack of a better word. There’s a definite hipster vibe that comes through with the music, decor, staff and even the dishes they use.

What I ate:

Wonderfully flavorful and fresh bread, tender green beans with pistachio cream, a modern twist on carbonara with zucchini and sumac, all paired with a structured orange wine. Finally, the tarte citron was unbelievably good so don’t skip dessert.

What else you should know:

The tasting menu options include three dishes for €25, 3 glasses of wine for €18 and 5 glasses of wine for €30.
